There is an uneasiness that comes over me when I enter a scenario out of my control. It is similar to that of receiving a test and realizing you should have studied. That piece of paper is out of your hands, yet physically in them, and most likely going to meet an over zealous red pen. Your stomach reverts inward. Heaviness comes over you. You must just guess “C” and move on. This uneasiness met me one day in Italy. I was entrenched in a scenario out of my control. I just had to trust in nature that everything would turn out as it should. I entered into the situation just like a test. I Continue Reading
“Can’t” and Travel Don’t Go Together
Hearing I can’t do something, tends to get under my skin. No, it doesn’t just get under my skin. It makes my blood boil. Suzy, you can’t do that. Suzy, don’t say that. Alert, alert, redheaded temperature is rising. I have never been one to listen to people tell me what to do, especially when they tell me I can’t do something. Perhaps others have heard, “Oh you can’t go there. You wouldn’t be able survive in (fill in destination here).” I don’t know what I have strapped across my face, but watch me. I’m going. I don’t doubt many also hear these "can’ts" when it comes to travel. Continue Reading
Luxembourg Wishes You Were Here
Wedged in between so many other European greats, France, Germany, and Belgium to be exact, Luxembourg doesn't always get the attention it deserves. I previously wrote a post about my stop in Vianden, Luxembourg. However, I didn't share all of my photos from that day. Allow me to let Luxembourg do the talking and make you wish you were there. Do you have a "wish you were here" photo you want to share? Email suzy [at] suzyguese [dot] com. I will include a link back to your blog or website. Continue Reading
Early to the Airport Traveler or Final Boarding Call Walk-On?
There are two types of travelers in this world, those that get to the airport early and those that arrive minutes, if not seconds, before final boarding. I am far from the latter type of traveler. Around three hours to my flight, I start to develop this anxiety. The clock becomes some sort of captivating TV show to me. I can’t take my eyes off of it, prodding whoever is my airport driver that day to be ready to go at a moment's notice. At two hours to my flight, I better at least be in a car shortly away from the airport. My anxiety doesn’t end there. After saying my goodbyes, I quickly dart Continue Reading
Dealing with Dreaded Travel Hesitation
You open up a window on your computer screen. A listing of airline prices stares not so friendly back at you. It’s actually more of an evil eye these days. You hesitate and close out the screen. A few days later, you come back to this same destination. You fill out the information, give the airline your whole life story, and circle the “Purchase” button with your mouse. Then an uncontrollable disease infects you. You hesitate about buying that ticket. You hesitate to move, not just the mouse, but yourself to somewhere else. I’m not talking about hesitating because of prices or Continue Reading
Travel Snapshots: Hugging Trees, Mosaics and Views in Sicily
When traveling throughout Sicily, most advise to pay a visit to Palermo. Near Palermo, the town of Monreale perches itself up at a high standing, figuratively and literally. What makes Monreale far from the real is the town’s Cathedral. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much. Go ahead and judge this book by its cover. You will be wrong once you pass through its doors. Founded in 1174, the Monreale Cathedral bears Norman, Arab, and Byzantine art and architecture, making this place of worship unlike any other. The Monreale Cathedral left me with three enveloping experiences that Continue Reading
Raking in the Miles and Money By Traveling
I have a friend that I jokingly say pinches pennies. Well maybe I’m not joking. He writes down when he “splurges” on a $2 soda. He keeps track of everything he buys, big or small. Despite the pennies he is always pinching and my claims that he would dive for a dime on the ground if he saw it, he has traveled to more countries than most people I know. He has spent over two and a half years living in places far away from his home. He may not be a rich man, but he is certainly well traveled with unending perspective. He cuts back on daily luxuries so that he can spend his money traveling, Continue Reading
