There are two types of travelers in this world, those that get to the airport early and those that arrive minutes, if not seconds, before final boarding. I am far from the latter type of traveler. Around three hours to my flight, I start to develop this anxiety. The clock becomes some sort of captivating TV show to me. I can’t take my eyes off of it, prodding whoever is my airport driver that day to be ready to go at a moment's notice. At two hours to my flight, I better at least be in a car shortly away from the airport. My anxiety doesn’t end there. After saying my goodbyes, I quickly dart Continue Reading
Dealing with Dreaded Travel Hesitation
You open up a window on your computer screen. A listing of airline prices stares not so friendly back at you. It’s actually more of an evil eye these days. You hesitate and close out the screen. A few days later, you come back to this same destination. You fill out the information, give the airline your whole life story, and circle the “Purchase” button with your mouse. Then an uncontrollable disease infects you. You hesitate about buying that ticket. You hesitate to move, not just the mouse, but yourself to somewhere else. I’m not talking about hesitating because of prices or Continue Reading

Raking in the Miles and Money By Traveling
I have a friend that I jokingly say pinches pennies. Well maybe I’m not joking. He writes down when he “splurges” on a $2 soda. He keeps track of everything he buys, big or small. Despite the pennies he is always pinching and my claims that he would dive for a dime on the ground if he saw it, he has traveled to more countries than most people I know. He has spent over two and a half years living in places far away from his home. He may not be a rich man, but he is certainly well traveled with unending perspective. He cuts back on daily luxuries so that he can spend his money traveling, Continue Reading
Curing The Solo Travel Loneliness Monster
I am sitting in the airport, waiting to catch a flight. This scenario plays out at countless airports around the world. Often, there is someone waiting for us on the other end of that plane ride. Other times, there is no one. We are just heading into the unknown, not knowing a soul at our destination. Today I am lucky to have a friendly face, fingers crossed, greeting me on the other end of that short plane ride. However, when I make a much longer and more extensive trip in just 2 months, no one will be waiting for me or expecting my arrival at the other end. Travel can be a lonely Continue Reading
Sitting on Suitcases and Speaking the Language of Your Destination
As I prepare for a trip of my own, I thought in the coming months I would share some travel preparation tips. So many of us head out to these countries all around the world without learning one word of the languages we will be hearing. Language is so much a part of understanding a place. While attractions and customs may give insight, it is the words pouring from locals' lips that ironically say the most about a place. As I head to Italy this summer, I am committing myself to start studying my Italian again. While I know it is rusty as next to no one in Colorado speaks the romance Continue Reading
